SHIPPING YOUR CAR OVERSEAS : WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

SHIPPING YOUR CAR OVERSEAS : WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

When it comes to transshipping your vehicle abroad, most of the shippers will tell you to either opt for roll on/roll off or container freight. Though both the alternatives will deliver your car to the intended port of call, not only are the procedures different but the costs involved also vary greatly. Roll on/roll off or RoRo shipping is carried out in marine vessels exclusively designed for this purpose and is the popular choice amongst customers as well as shippers.

The modern-day RoRo ships are simply gigantic and could hold up and transport 6,000 vehicles. You can like the vessel to a sailing car park as vehicles are smoothly loaded onto it via a ramp. That a gargantuan amount of vehicles can be driven up the ramp very quickly is what makes this option of transshipment cheaper.

Nevertheless, one glaring downside of this shipping method is that you’re ordinarily not allowed to include personal items with your package. This is simply because the shipper is only liable to ferry your vehicle and not your personal stuff. Your car is kept unlocked for the better part of the journey to make sure that in case of any untoward incident, the shipper can shift your vehicle as early as possible.
In this respect, container shipping enjoys an edge over RoRo transshipment. A container shipping firm can come to your aid particularly if your car is of a special type and unsuitable for Roll On/Roll Off transportation and also when the destination port is out of bounds for the latter mode of shipping. Most shipping containers usually have two sizes-20’ and 40’ (lengthwise). While 20’ containers can easily take in one 4x4 vehicle, the 40’ container is capable of storing two 4 x4 vehicles comfortably.
Since many such containers can be placed on a large vessel, this transportation process often is more cost-efficient compared to the RoRo option. And yes, you can also put in personal belongings inside the car while having it booked for shipping.
