MERCHANT NAVY



Merchant navy is a field which gives the opportunity to travel across the globe, feel the adventure in the seas, and assist the international trade with the possibilities of high growth and remunerations. Merchant navy is the backbone of global trade (including export and import). This sector is different from ‘navy’ as merchant navy offers commercial and trade associated services and later one serves to the nation’s defense. 

Merchant navy is the emerging and alluring career option for youngsters in India these days. This sector employs a large number of workers for shipment, carrying and delivering the cargoes worldwide. The job in this field is glamorous but equally challenging also. Choosing merchant navy as a career can be proved as a satisfactory and monetarily rewarding, but it requires hard work and levels of evaluation, examination to get the desired job. Merchant navy armada (fleet) includes cargo ships, passenger ships, bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, a barge carrying ships, roll on/roll off ships, etc. 

There are immense job opportunities available in India in both government and private shipping firms such as clearinghouses, del credere agents, Shipping Corporation of India, etc. 
Criteria of Eligibility
  • The candidate should have finished or is in the process of finishing class 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Math)
  • The individual should be unmarried (male or female Indian citizens)
  • Vision needs to be normal, but the glasses with the power of +2.5 or -2.5 is allowed
  • The admission process is followed by an entrance test, screening test, and a written exam
  • An interview and medical examination needs to be cleared
  • Ship-training course before the job
Job Profiles and Salaries
  • Electro-technical Officer
  • Navigation officer (Deck officer)
  • Catering and hospitality crew (for instance, pursers, chef, housekeepers, stewards, etc.)
  • Engineer
  • Ratings (skilled seafarers who help in the daily task of officers)
The salary for various job profiles in merchant navy ranges between Rs.12, 000 to Rs. 8 lakhs per month but this can vary from city to city and firm to firm.

G.P. RATING General Purpose Rating is a six-month-long course for merchant navy. GP rating is characterized by the job roles in the deck or engine crew. It is pre-sea training includes two chief cadets- engine crew and deck crew. For this course, the age limit is between 18 to 25 years which is taken into consideration during the process of admission.
